Baptism of Children

Baptism of Children at OLC Church

The celebration of an infant’s baptism is a joyous occasion for that child’s family and for the family of the Church. Baptism celebrates the fact that God loves us so much that God calls us to have a special, personal relationship with Him. A relationship so close that God claims us as His own and gives us the privilege of calling Him “Our Father”!

Just as the birth of a child leads parents to reflect on the gift of human life, so the baptism of a child leads parents, and the whole parish, to reflect on this sacrament and what it means to be a part of God’s Church.   As parents reflect upon the meaning of their child’s baptism, the parish community also reflects and joins in the celebration of baptism.  Therefore, we celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism during Sunday Mass when the community gathers to celebrate the mystery of the death and resurrection of Jesus.  Our community welcomes these children into the life of grace and into our parish community.

The Baptism Program at OLC is designed to help parents in that reflection. Its primary purpose is not to prepare parents to celebrate the day of baptism when the waters of baptism are poured over their child, but rather to help parents reflect on the meaning of their own baptism and the Catholic faith they wish to share with their child. Baptism at OLC has several components spread over a period of months.

Gathering to Rejoice

The first component of Baptism at OLC involves a gathering during pregnancy. This gathering, which takes places during the third, fourth, or fifth month of pregnancy, brings together all parents at OLC who are expecting the birth of a child. It is time for parents to meet others who are expecting an addition to their family. This social gathering is time for rejoicing, a time to celebrate the new life they are carrying, and the new life whose birth they are awaiting. This gathering also includes some practical information, a special blessing for expectant parents, and light refreshments.

Gathering to Understand

The second component of Baptism at OLC gives parents an opportunity to more fully understand the meaning of the sacrament of baptism in their own life. Baptism is not something we receive, but rather a way of living, a vision of life, a relationship with God, and relationship with God’s Church. Godparents, if they are able, are encouraged to attend Gathering to Understand.

Gathering to Celebrate
The fourth component of Baptism at OLC is the actual ceremony. Baptisms always takes place during Sunday Mass, generally at the 10 am or 12:30 pm Mass. Baptisms take place within Sunday Mass because through the sacrament of baptism a child is incorporated into the Church, the community that gathers on Sunday. Christians are a Sunday people! Christ was raised to new life on Easter Sunday. The Risen Lord appeared to his disciples most often on a Sunday. The Holy Spirit descended upon the Church on Pentecost Sunday. Sunday is our day. Sunday is the day when people are born to new life as Christians.

Gathering to Celebrate (Baptisms) takes place during Sunday Mass on the dates indicated below:

Remember that Our Lady of Czestochowa parish does not celebrate baptisms during Lent.  Please, plan accordingly  so you can celebrate the baptism of you child after Easter.

Gathering to Remember
The fifth component of Baptism at OLC takes place over a period of months and years. In fact, it never ends until we meet the Lord face to face. We gather each Sunday at Mass to grow in our Christian faith and to remember who we are as followers of Christ and whose children we have become through baptism. We also gather at particular times to assist parents in their responsibility to be “examples of faith to inspire their child.” One such Gathering to Remember involves a Sunday Mass celebrated by one of the Assistant Bishops of Newark followed by an informal reception. This Mass and reception reminds parents that their children, and all the baptized, are part of a Church community far larger that any one parish. God’s Church embraces the world.
